Images of Caerleon from the GATHERING THE JEWELS project
The goal of the "Gathering the Jewels" project is to put the cream of Wales' cultural history, from repositories throughout Wales, on the Internet for people to learn from and enjoy. The project was initially funded by the New Opportunities Fund, but now comes under the umbrella of Culture Net Cymru, funded by the Welsh Assembly. Altogether 20 000 items from the museums, libraries and archives of Wales have been digitised and can now be explored online.

Arthur Machen was a prolific writer of fantasy fiction who provided an influence for many who have subsequently written in this field, however, in his later years this Caerleon-born author suffered greatly from financial uncertainty. To ease his situation his friends arranged an 80th birthday lunch at which he was presented with a cheque consisting of donations from them all. This
letter provides a record of the events of the day.
