WILLIAM DOWNING EVANS

William Downing Evans: Poetry and Poverty in Nineteenth Century Newport.

Fascinating book. William Downing Evans, eldest son of a lime burner, was born in Caerleon in 1811. He moved to Newport and made a name for himself (literally and figuratively) as a poet, painter and composer using his Bardic name 'Leon'. In 1937 he was appointed Registrar of Births and Deaths and Clerk to Newport's Poor Law Guardians - probably his first paid position. During the 50 years he held these posts he worked to improve the town's living conditions.

The book contains an interesting biography and over 400 pages of his poems, songs and hymns. At the moment a CD with 15 of his songs brought to life as 'Audio rendered MIDI performances' is available for £4. The book can be purchased directly from the publishers - the South Wales Record Society. Follow this external link for more details and an order form: South Wales Record Society

For more information about the man and to hear one of the songs follow this link.
