This unusual award has been crafted from a 1914 silver florin. So far our investigations into who (or what) General Sir Knox was and why he was presented with this medal for bravery have drawn a blank.
It may have been engraved early in 1915 before a 1915 florin was available but this is just a guess. But would a real knighted general be presented with a medal like this? If it was connected with WW1 why would it be presented at Caerleon? On the other hand, what act of bravery could a general carry out in Caerleon?
One possibility is that it is connected with Caerleon Race Course. Can anyone out there throw any light on this mystery medal? |
