Caerleon Bridge and Wharf
Watercolour by Thomas Cooke 1785
Before the wooden bridge was demolished and the new stone bridge built further down river, ships could sail right up to the quay below the Hanbury Arms. A considerable amount of trading took place here - in and out - where the old tramroad (constructed c.1794) terminated. After the stone bridge was built (around 1808) a new wharf was constructed on the 'Newport' side.
Thomas Cooke was an amateur Artist living in Newport. He was the secretary of the Old Monmouthshire Canal Company and the Old Monmouthshire Tramroads.
