of Cambria House, Mill Street. At the time our photo was taken this
part of the building was used by the ambulance service. During its
lifetime, though, it had seen many uses. Just before World War II
Basque refugee
children were given a safe haven here. During the war it was
used by the military. More recently it housed library books.
This section of the building was erected in the
mid nineteenth century as an extension to the workhouse. Both
the older building and the original workhouse can be seen in a

Cambria House was demolished in 1982. The site
was used as an ambulance depot until 1997. Now private houses
occupy this part of Mill Street.
