Can anyone out there put a date to this photo? Or a name to
a face? Or tell us what the occasion is?
The college (formally named the Monmouthshire Training College)
opened in 1914 to train male students as teachers, in the same
year a college opened in Barry to train female teachers. It
was not until 1962 that Caerleon College admitted female students.
A rapid expansion followed
from 140 students to 750.
Recent history includes a serious fire in 1992 which fortunately
left the familiar landmark of the clock tower undamaged. In
1996 the college became the University of Wales College, Newport;
and in 2003 it was renamed the University of Wales, Newport.
