The Holidays At Home week commenced with a carnival. Streets and organisations competed to produce the best float. The Carnival queen was crowned and the fun continued with events such as barrel rolling; a comic football match with goalposts on wires; children's sports; talent competitions and a dance in the Unionist Hall, Church Street. (Long gone, it was opposite the present Vine Cottages.) Now, what distinguished this from other dances was that the male committee members dressed as women, the women as men! No expense spared - superb clothes, tuxedos the lot! |
Marjorie Phillips, Mrs Bolton and Kathy Dixon are about to take to the cricket pitch. |
