One of a
series of prints produced by Hancock's Brewery. The scene depicts
the area in 1800 when the old wooden bridge was still in place.
Cargoes were unloaded at the quay below the Hanbury.
It is thought that the series of prints dates from the 1950s.
Hancocks distributed the framed views to their Inns - a neat marketing
device.
The artist seems to have researched the scene well. It would be
interesting to know if it is based on a genuine old view from
the same viewpoint. |
